The holm-oak charcoal grill in central Granada

Since 1979, Mesón Alegría has been Granada's quintessential grill house. Aged meats cooked over holm-oak charcoal, right in the centre of Granada, a step from the Isabel la Católica Theatre.

The embers

Holm-oak charcoal, never gas

Our oven has burned holm-oak charcoal since 1995. Holm oak gives a slow, intense, clean ember that sears the meat outside and keeps it juicy inside, with a smokiness you can't get any other way.

Every cut is grilled in sight of the fire, cooked exactly to each guest's taste. It is the heart of the mesón and the reason Granada knows us as the home of charcoal-grilled meat.

The stone

Meat on the stone, the flagship dish

Meat on the stone is what people order most at the Mesón. The cut comes off the holm-oak grill and reaches the table on a burning-hot stone, so it finishes cooking in front of you, exactly to each guest's taste, and the last bite is as hot as the first.

That is how we serve the chuletón on the stone, alongside suckling lamb chops, mature beef over the embers and grilled octopus. It is the way of eating meat that Granada has associated with this house since 1995.

The meat

Mature beef, lamb and chuletón

We work with aged mature beef, marbled chuletón, suckling lamb and Iberian cuts. Meat selected piece by piece and served by weight, so every table eats exactly what it wants.

Served with our migas, oil-toasted bread and homemade desserts, it is the food that has defined Granada for over four decades.

Questions about the holm-oak charcoal grill in Granada

Mesón Alegría is a grill house in central Granada, at Calle de las Moras 4, next to the Isabel la Católica Theatre. The meat is cooked on the stone and over the embers in two holm-oak charcoal ovens, burning without a break since 1995.

  • What is meat on the stone?

It is the flagship dish of the house. The cut is grilled in the holm-oak charcoal oven and served on a burning-hot stone, so it finishes cooking at the table: each guest takes it to their own preferred point and the last bite is as hot as the first.

  • Why holm-oak charcoal and not gas?

Because holm oak gives a slow, intense, clean ember: it sears the meat outside, keeps it juicy inside and leaves a smokiness gas cannot produce. Our two ovens have burned holm oak since 1995 — the first in Granada to do so.

  • What cuts of meat are there?

Aged mature beef, marbled chuletón, suckling lamb chops, beef and Iberian cuts, plus grilled octopus. Some pieces are served by weight: the waiter tells you the price before the order goes to the kitchen.

  • Where is the grill house?

At Calle de las Moras 4, 18009 Granada, right in the centre of Granada city, next to the Isabel la Católica Theatre and five minutes from the Cathedral. Parking San Agustín is about 200 metres away.

  • Is there anything besides meat?

Yes. The traditional Granada dishes — tortilla Sacromonte, broad beans with ham, remojón granaíno — and a section of salads, cold and hot starters and grilled vegetables. Wines have their own list.
